KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Local Government and Housing Ministry is open to exploring a rent-to-own scheme for People’s Housing Project (PPR) units to curb tenancy abuse and encourage ownership among the B40 group.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the current rental model is meant as a temporary solution for low-income families, with eligibility reviewed every 10 years.
He agreed with Sulabayan assemblyman Datuk Jaujan Sambakong’s suggestion that ownership may foster better care of the units.
Assistant Minister Datuk Isnin Aliasnih confirmed that enforcement and monitoring are ongoing, with several units vacated at PPR Taman Gum-Gum Jaya and eight units found vacant at Taman Murni. No units were vacant at Taman Batu Putih as of the latest inspections.
The Ministry also pledged to investigate claims of subletting and tenancy violations.
