Sabah Parks is monitoring ice formation at Mount Kinabalu’s Panalaban base camp due to cold, dry weather, advising climbers to take safety precautions.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Parks is monitoring ice formation at the Panalaban substation on Mount Kinabalu. The phenomenon was recorded at the area, which is 3,272.7 metres above sea level.

In a statement, the authority said the ice is due to dry weather and low humidity around the mountain. These conditions caused a significant temperature drop at higher altitudes.

The ice formed on plant surfaces and within the environment at the Panalaban base camp. Sabah Parks explained this is a natural and periodic occurrence in the mountain’s high-altitude areas.

It typically happens during clear, dry weather when temperatures fall sharply overnight. The park advised climbers, guides, porters, and staff in the area to wear appropriate cold-weather clothing.

They are also advised to stay well hydrated and follow all safety instructions from park management. Sabah Parks said it will continue monitoring weather and temperature developments in the highlands.

This ongoing monitoring aims to ensure the safety of all visitors and staff on the mountain.
