Sabah’s hardcore poverty progress among Malaysia’s ‘quieter’ gains

Kota Kinabalu: The removal of all 10,825 households from Sabah’s hardcore poverty list was among Malaysia’s “quieter” achievements this year, said World Bank economist Apurva Sanghi (pic).

In a post on X, Sanghi said the progress was among several developments that may have gone unnoticed amid the country’s wider economic and social challenges.

He also highlighted Malaysia’s position as the world’s top-ranked destination for Muslim-friendly and Islamic tourism and its first-place ranking in the global Open Data Inventory last year.

Sanghi noted changes to the National Trust Fund (KWAN), with future withdrawals limited to education, healthcare and climate adaptation to ensure its resources are channelled towards long-term national benefits.

“Many challenges remain but today is a good day to appreciate some of this quieter progress,” he said in conjunction with Malaysia’s 69th Merdeka Day celebrations.
