Safma eyes stronger Sabah fisheries industry

SERDANG: Sabah Fish Marketing Sdn Bhd (Safma) is committed to strengthening Sabah’s fisheries industry through technology, digitalisation, cold-chain development and value-added products to support State and Federal government efforts towards food security.

Its Chairman Datuk Mohammad Mohamarin said Safma’s participation in Maha 2026 was aimed at showcasing the potential of Sabah’s seafood products to the public, industry players and investors.

“In line with Maha 2026’s theme, ‘Value Creation for Food Security’, Safma is focusing on promoting Ikan Rakyat Sabah as a frozen seafood product with potential for expansion into wider markets, including Peninsular Malaysia,” he said during a visit to the Safma booth at the Sabah Pavilion at Maeps here on Thursday.

Mohammad said rising operating and labour costs as well as climate change were among the industry’s main challenges, requiring greater use of technology and data while reducing post-landing waste across the fisheries value chain.

He said Safma also sees the blue economy as an opportunity to sustainably increase the value of marine resources through processing, value-added products, fisheries technology, frozen cold-chain systems and marine biotechnology, while creating opportunities for young people in marine technology, processing, logistics, digital marketing and entrepreneurship.
