Mohamed Salah scored a goal and assisted another as Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1 to claim their first-ever World Cup win on Sunday.
New Zealand thought they would be the ones celebrating a maiden victory at the tournament as Finn Surman gave them the lead in the 15th minute.
Surman rose high to power home a corner from the team's social media rising star Tim Payne.
But Mustafa Zico levelled for Egypt in the 58th. He collected a cross from Mohamed Hany and headed it into the goal. Goalkeeper Max Crocombe got a hand to it but wasn't strong enough to stop it.
Team star Salah followed suit and was on target in the 67th to turn the game around. He played a lovely one-two with Zico before powering a finish past Crocombe.
Substitute Trezeguet came on in the 76th and sealed the historic victory in the 82nd with a diving header to finish off Salah's corner.
Having first competed at the World Cup in 1934, Egypt got their first win at the tournament 92 years later.
"It's incredible. I don't know how to express it in words," Salah said.
"It's a great achievement for all the players, for the staff, so hopefully we can carry on like this in the group, and we can write history and qualify (to the knock-outs) – and in years to come it will be remembered as one the best achievements in the history (of Egyptian football)."
Egypt now top the Group G standings with four points. Iran and Belgium played out a goalless draw earlier and are two points back in second and third respectively. New Zealand are last with one point.
While the Egyptians face Iran in their final group stage match on Friday, New Zealand will bid again for a first World Cup win against Belgium.
