
Kota Kinabalu: Sandakan added two more gold medals on Saturday to lead the table standing with five gold, two silver and four bronze medals on day three of the 10th Sabah Games (Saga) held here.
All their medals came from table tennis and on the final day of the event, they clinched the men and women’s singles titles as well.
Cyprian Yap Xuan Bang won the mens’ title after a hard fought 11-8, 9-11,10-12,11-7,11-8, 9-11, 11-5 victory over team mate Mervyn Wong Yi in the final.
It was another all Sandakan affair in the women’s final where Lo Shu Thong beat Lau En Yu 11-7,8-11,12-10,12-10,11-4 to claim the title.
Sandakan had earlier claimed the team titles for both the men and women with wins over Kota Kinabalu and Tawau respectively in the finals.
They also won the Women’s doubles on Friday through Lo Shu Thong/Lau En Yu who beat Janny Vun Jue Nee/Verona Kenumpang @Fred from Beaufort 11-5, 11-9, 11-7 in the final.
Their bronze medals came from Wong Ming Chen/Edrian Yap Xuan Bin and Cyprian Yap Xuan Bang/Mervyn Wong Yi in the men’s doubles, Chia Xin Tong/Daveney Yap Tung in the women’s doubles, Chia Zhuo Eu/Wendy Lau Hui Yu in the mixed doubles.
Meanwhile, Tawau are second on the table standing with one gold, one silver and one bronze.
The gold was won by the mixed doubles pair of Fung Jia Huan/Fung Jia Wen who took the title with a 11-8, 11-8,11-8 win over Keningau’s Ng Jian Jun/Shernny Lau Jia Yin while the silver from the women’s team and the bronze by Fung Jia Kang in the men’s singles.
Papar were third with one gold and one bronze with the gold delivered by Muhd Izzuddin Sainin/Mohd Shearil Aizat Ahmad in the men’s double following the 11-8,7-11,11-8,11-9 win over Kota Kinabalu’s Beh Jing Hong/Joshua Chin Yu Jie in the final, while the bronze from the men’s team.
In fourth place was Kota Kinabalu with two silvers and two bronze medals followed by Beaufort and Keninagu, both with one silver and one bronze, Kudat with two bronze medals, Putatan and Ranau with one bronze each.
