Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) called for a more user-friendly approach as Kota Kinabalu and Penampang transition to a fully electronic parking system.

SAPP Vice President Gee Tien Siong proposed adopting a “time-and-punch” mechanism, similar to systems used in shopping mall parking.

“The system records the start and end times, automatically calculates the parking fee and deducts it from prepaid accounts,” he said in a statement, Friday.

“This prevents citizens from being unfairly fined for forgetting or delaying the extension of their parking time.”

Gee urged assemblymen and MPs to consider public feedback, adding “transitioning to a smart parking system means delegating timekeeping tasks to computers rather than sticking to an outdated and less humane model.”

Gee also questioned the effectiveness of the Selangor-based supplier appointed by City Hall (DBKK) and Penampang District Council to deliver a parking system tailored to local needs.

“If the supplier fails to deliver, the Sabah government is capable of developing its own system,” he said.
