MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte said that she did not want to talk about her second impeachment case with her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, as she did not want him to hear "bad news" from her.
She also said that it was "unfair" for her critics to focus on her family in her impeachment case and reminded that the spouses and children of lawmakers were covered by the right of privacy.
Speaking to supporters outside the Scheveningen prison at The Hague after visiting her father on Tuesday afternoon (Wednesday morning Manila time), Duterte was asked if her father knew about the second impeachment case against her that was now up for voting at the plenary.
"I didn't mention the impeachment to him, and I didn't mention what happened in the House of Representatives. So he does not know that there is a second possible impeachment happening. I think he doesn't need to know that kind of bad news anymore, because it wouldn't have any value to him anyway," Duterte said in Filipino.
She added that her father should only know " happy thoughts" instead of the problems and corruption of lawmakers and other politicians allied with the Marcos administration
She also believes that many politicians would "paint their enemies black so that they appear white" in describing the attacks against her.
"Filipinos need to learn—they need to learn how to discern what they see on social media, particularly because the information appearing there can be manipulated," Duterte said.
She said that it was unfair for her detractors to include her family in her impeachment complaint.
"Well, I think it's unfair because they aren't the vice president and they aren't being impeached. And just like the spouses and children of congressmen, they have the right to privacy, being ordinary individuals and private citizens." Duterte said.
