Kota Kinabalu: A Sekolah Indonesia Kota Kinabalu’s trip to a beach in Karambunai turned tragic when a 12-year-old student drowned at the beach near Kg Bakasa, Tuesday.

Rescuers found the boy about 50 metres from where he was last seen at a depth of two metres at 10.25am, said a Fire Department spokesman.

The boy was pronounced dead by health personnel at the scene and was handed over to the police for further action.

Kota Kinabalu Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said preliminary investigations did not find criminal elements.

Eleven Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Station personnel responded to the scene upon receiving the 8.57am distress call.

A water surface search and rescue operation was carried out via boat.
