Kota Kinabalu: A schoolgirl died a day after her cousin lost control and crashed the motorcycle they were riding near Kg Lokub along Jalan Sepanggar, here, on Monday.

Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief ACP Zaidi Abdullah said the 17-year-old victim and her cousin, 18, were on the way to Sepanggar from Menggatal on a Yamaha 135LC.

“It was drizzling and the road was wet in the 6.20am incident. Both victims were lying on the left shoulder of the road in a semi-conscious state and covered in blood.

“They were then taken by the ambulance and the Fire Department to the Likas Hospital for further treatment,” he said in a statement.

Read more Zaidi said the pillion rider was confirmed dead at approximately 12.36am on Tuesday while receiving treatment at the hospital.

“Her cousin meanwhile was transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 at about 6.29am.”

Zaidi said the deceased would be taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 Forensics Department for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

“Preliminary investigations show the accident was due to the rider’s own negligence,” he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

On Monday, a seven-year-old schoolgirl was also killed on the way to school at SK Kolombong when a 40-tonne lorry exiting a U-turn knocked the Proton Saga driven by a family friend.
