A stretch of the M6 highway is expected to be closed for hours following a “serious collision” on Monday morning, National Highways has said.
The M6 in Staffordshire was shut due to a crash involving three heavy goods vehicles and a car on the northbound carriageway at around 4.10am.
Staffordshire Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service, Staffordshire Fire & Rescue and National Highways were called to the scene following the incident.
National Highways said the road closure could be lengthy as an investigation, recovery, and clean-up take place.
It has urged drivers to plan ahead, warning of delays of more than an hour and up to six miles of congestion.
“Police investigations are still ongoing, so the northbound carriageway remains closed,” it said.
“The closure is expected to remain in place until this afternoon to allow the investigations, scene clearance and resurfacing works to be completed.”
The southbound carriageway was also closed to give emergency services access to the scene, but has since reopened.
Diversion routes have been put in place on both sides of the M6, National Highways added.
“Road users caught within the closure between J15 and the scene of the collision on the northbound carriageway is in the process of being released via rearward relief, this will be a protracted process.
“Road users planning on using the M6 northbound towards J15 or southbound towards J16 this morning should expect delays to increase quickly and allow plenty of extra time for their journeys.
“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
