Sedco, UMS explore AI for maritime economy

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) will study a proposed strategic collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) on using artificial intelligence (AI) to develop the maritime economy.

Sedco Group Chairman Datuk Masiung Banah said AI could have a significant impact on developing the seafood-based blue economy sector.

“I will call a special meeting with Sedco’s top management on the UMS proposal, in line with the agency’s commitment through the Kudat Blue Economy Industrial Park (KBEIP) project,” he said after receiving a UMS delegation Thursday.

The delegation, led by Assistant Vice-Chancellor Prof Rayner Alfred and Assoc Prof Mohammad Puad Debit, proposed an AI innovation network between Sedco and UMS through the Malaysia AI Centre of Excellence (MaiCoE).

Masiung said Sedco would assess UMS’ expertise for its projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan as the corporation develops a framework to position Sabah as a maritime economy hub in Kudat.
