SHAH ALAM - The Selangor government is assessing whether a by-election is required following allegations involving the eligibility of a state assemblyman, with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari saying the matter is currently being reviewed by the state's legal adviser.
According to a report by Free Malaysia Today, Amirudin said the allegations must first be verified before any decision is made on the next course of action.
"We have received some information regarding the matter. I am currently reviewing it with our legal adviser.
"We need to verify those allegations or any claims concerning the loss or forfeiture of a state assemblyman's eligibility," he was reported as saying after attending the Kuala Pilah Berselawat dan Munajat programme, which was also attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said the matter is currently being reviewed with the state legal adviser to determine the appropriate course of action.
If the legal review concludes that a by-election is required, the state government will notify the Election Commission accordingly.
"The Speaker may provide an update during our assembly sitting on Aug 3, as we have a scheduled session," he said.
