Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has expressed his disappointment with the remarks made by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang regarding the monarchy in light of the Federal Court's decision to annul certain provisions in a shariah criminal enactment in Kelantan. The Sultan conveyed his profound disappointment through a letter sent to Hadi via the state's PAS commissioner Ab Halim Tamuri.

The monarch was particularly irked by Hadi's statement titled 'The Importance of Upholding Islam' and his subsequent advice to Malay rulers to not prioritize worldly interests. The Sultan's response to Hadi's comments was one of disapproval, describing them as highly inappropriate and uncultured, especially within the context of Malay culture that emphasizes respect and decorum when addressing royalty.

Sultan Sharafuddin emphasized that Hadi's statements could potentially sow division within the Muslim community, urging him to exercise caution and thorough understanding before making such remarks. The Sultan highlighted the significance of upholding the Federal Constitution as the supreme law of the land, stressing that Islam has been recognized as the religion of the federation since 1957 when the constitution was formulated.

He emphasized the need for all Malaysians to abide by the Federal Constitution, underscoring its importance in maintaining order and harmony in society. In his earlier address on February 15, Sultan Sharafuddin had called for respect towards the Federal Court's decision to invalidate certain provisions in the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment 2019, citing their constitutionality.

As the chairperson of the national council for Islamic affairs, the Sultan reiterated the Constitution's paramountcy and encouraged individuals to provide informed opinions on the court's ruling. Expressing his concern over the potential exploitation of Islam for political gain, Sultan Sharafuddin advised Hadi and other political leaders to refrain from using religion to further their political agendas and cautioned against damaging the sanctity of Islam.

He urged all stakeholders to approach matters with sensitivity, respect, and a commitment to upholding the rule of law. In conclusion, Sultan Sharafuddin’s response to Hadi Awang's remarks reflects a commitment to upholding the values of respect, decorum, and unity within the Malay and Muslim communities.

His emphasis on the adherence to the Federal Constitution as the supreme law underscores the importance of legal frameworks in maintaining social harmony and justice. The Sultan's call for responsible discourse and actions serves as a timely reminder for all individuals, particularly those in positions of influence, to handle sensitive issues with care and consideration for the well-being of society as a whole.
