KUNAK: Air quality in Semporna reached an unhealthy level with an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 143 on Tuesday, while neighbouring Kunak recorded a moderate reading of 99 amid continuing haze.
Sabah Environment Department readings showed hazy conditions affecting several areas, particularly on the east coast, with reduced visibility drawing concern among residents.
A Daily Express check in Kunak found that hills and offshore islands which are normally clearly visible were increasingly obscured by the haze, with visibility in some areas reduced at distances of about four kilometres.
The haze has become increasingly noticeable along the east coast since last week and is believed to be influenced by smoke from forest and land fires in Indonesia carried by winds across the border, affecting air quality in parts of Sabah.
The department advised the public, particularly children, the elderly and those with health problems, to take precautions and reduce outdoor activities.
