A heartbreaking incident took place on May 14 in China, as an elderly woman who was seriously ill collapsed and died right outside a bank.

According to the South China Morning Post, the woman (identified as Peng) had been brought to the bank by her daughter to withdraw 50,000 yuan (RM29,324) for her medical treatment.

Her daughter entered the wrong password multiple times

The 62-year-old woman had been living with diabetes for years and was recently hospitalised after a fall that resulted in a fractured leg.

That afternoon, one of Peng’s daughters went to the bank with her mother’s identity card and deposit book but couldn’t complete the transaction after entering the password incorrectly several times.

Peng’s daughter allegedly explained that her mother was unwell, but the bank clerk insisted that Peng had to be there in person to sort things out.

Peng was not fully conscious at the time

Peng’s daughter called her sister, who brought Peng to the bank in a wheelchair. Despite their efforts, after an hour, they still couldn’t withdraw the funds.

Peng was reportedly not fully conscious, with her head leaning to one side, making it impossible for her to meet the bank’s face recognition requirements, which involved movements like nodding and blinking.

Later, Peng’s daughters took her outside for some fresh air, but tragically, she passed away right at the bank’s entrance.

The bank claimed they weren’t aware of Peng’s medical condition

An anonymous bank employee reportedly claimed that Peng’s family hadn’t informed staff about her medical condition. When Peng arrived at the bank and had difficulty cooperating with procedures, employees allegedly suggested that her daughters take her home to rest, but the family declined.

The case remains under investigation, with officials confirming that Peng died from “a sudden outbreak of illness”. Local police have said they will release their findings soon.

Peng’s nephew later announced that the family had reached a settlement with the bank, where they agreed to cover Peng’s funeral expenses and provide the family with 100,000 yuan (RM58,648) as “consolation money.”
