Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will appoint a company to distribute electricity legally to squatter colonies throughout Sabah, it has been reported.
SESB’s Distribution General Manager Addie Ahmad said the prepaid electricity system was piloted in Kg Forest, Sandakan, at the end of last year.
"This is one of the efforts to supply electricity to those who are not eligible to apply for an electricity supply connection from SESB,” Utusan quoted him as saying after an integrated operation against illegal wiring in the slums of Kg Numbak, Sepanggar, here, Thursday.
"The appointed company will supply electricity to the squatters through the main line provided by SESB.
"However, the company is also responsible for fixing the electric poles in the squatters, replacing the damaged electricity cables and making the wiring in the squatters more orderly,” he said, adding there are about 31,000 homes in 193 squatter colonies across Sabah.
The move will reduce SESB losses caused by illegal connections and people in slums can still get power although without the required documents, he said.
