Newcastle great Alan Shearer says they paid for not taking their chances on Sunday against Liverpool.
Newcastle were a goal and a man up before Darwin Nunez jumped from the bench to score twice late on to win the match for Liverpool 2-1.
He told the Rest is Football podcast: "I kept saying if we don't get a second goal, we're going to regret it. We're going to get punished here because that's just what happens in football. They missed chance after chance after chance, and you also have to give Alisson a huge mention because one of the saves he made from Almiron to make it 2-0 was just unbelievable.
"The longer the game went on...Newcastle just seemed to fold a bit in the last half an hour. It was a slight surprise for me that was [Anthony Gordon's substitution], I thought he was looking slightly tired and I know that Barnes came on two weeks ago and got a lot of credit for the goal and the assist. But Trent couldn't go anywhere near Anthony Gordon, he was giving him a torrid afternoon because he knew one more tackle and he was going to get a red card, so I was slightly surprised he took him off.
"Normally that midfield, we said how good it was, Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton in the first game against Aston Villa. But when Joelinton went off, they lost a bit of fight and went really sloppy and invited Liverpool on. Some great substitutions from Jurgen Klopp, he brought Harvey Elliott on, he brought Diego Jota on.
"They then got on a grip on the game, they started getting people running in behind and then Nunez came on. My God his two finishes were out of this world. I'm not sure they were even half chances, they were that good. Both of them were right in the corner with Pope absolutely no chance."
