GEORGE TOWN - A sinkhole that appeared on Jalan Kenyalang 1 in Bayan Lepas near here on Monday is believed to have been caused by a leaking underground utility pipe.

Penang Infrastructure, Public Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said a contractor is currently excavating the site to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the source of the leak.

"We need to determine whether the leak involves a utility pipe belonging to Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) or the Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) before any further repair work can be undertaken by the relevant utility company,” he told a press conference at KOMTAR here today.

The Penang Public Works Department (JKR) announced yesterday that the side lane on Jalan Kenyalang 1 will be closed for six days until Jan 25 due to the sinkhole.

The sinkhole measures two metres in length and width, and is approximately 1.7 metres deep. - BERNAMA
