England legend Sir Geoff Hurst could not help but share his delight after England’s impressive World Cup victory over Mexico.

It was Harry Kane’s goal that proved the difference at the Azteca following Jude Bellingham’s brace inside the opening 45 minutes.

But make no mistake about it, there were a number of other England players who deserved a special mention for their performances in Mexico City.

Hurst knows better than anyone just what it takes to step up for England at the World Cup following his hat-trick in the final back in 1966.

Although the entire squad deserved credit for the victory against Mexico, there were five players who Hurst wanted to give a special mention to.

Kane was able to keep his cool from the spot, moving just one goal behind the leading pack in the race for the Golden Boot.

However, it was Bellingham who got the show on the road, with his quick-fire brace.

“Wow. Was that the best performance since our 66 final. Must be close. After a long day at Wimbledon yesterday I watched the game early this morning,” Hurst said on X.

“Everyone was outstanding. Bellingham, Kane, [Anthony] Gordon, [Declan] Rice, [Jordan] Pickford all brilliant. The whole team stood up. Onwards and upwards now.”

Hurst is not the only one to pay special tribute to Jordan Pickford’s heroics between the sticks.

Andy Burnham praised Pickford after the Everton goalkeeper silenced any doubters following the opening four games.

Anthony Gordon also answered his critics after being given the nod to start against Mexico after an underwhelming start to the tournament.

The Three Lions now have until Saturday to rest up as England face Norway in Miami later this week.
