The world’s largest kite festival officially opens Thursday on the Danish island of Fanø, where over 5,000 kite enthusiasts have already filled the skies in anticipation.

Located on the country’s west coast, Fanø offers perfect flying conditions — wide beaches, firm sand, and steady sea winds — ideal for what has become the world’s largest kite event.

Now in its 40th year, the festival draws tens of thousands of colourful creations from across the world.

To celebrate, organisers have invited Indonesian kite masters to showcase traditions dating back thousands of years. Highlights include a 100-metre kite paraded through Nordby’s historic streets.

The event will continue until 22 June.
