After waiting five days for action against suspects who allegedly dumped hundreds of dead chickens into the Gang Canal in the Punjab area, the Water Resources Department has directed that a case be registered at the Hindumalkot police station in Sri Ganganagar.
District Collector Dr Amit Yadav said on Monday that when farmer organisations brought the matter to his notice last week, he immediately contacted officials in Muktsar over the phone and also sent a formal letter regarding the issue. He urged the authorities not only to prevent the recurrence of such incidents but also to register a police case against those responsible.
The DC further said that after learning about the incident, he had directed officials of the Water Resources Department to visit Punjab and assess the ground situation.
Dr Yadav said that since no positive response had been received from Punjab even after five days, he had instructed Water Resources Department Superintending Engineer (SE) Dheeraj Chawla to proceed with the registration of a case and maintain continuous monitoring of the matter.
He termed the dumping of large quantities of poultry and other animal carcasses into canal water an extremely serious and alarming issue that could not be ignored.
SE Dheeraj Chawla said that soon after the matter came to light last week, a departmental team led by an Assistant Engineer held discussions with officials in Punjab. The Punjab authorities were requested to identify those responsible and initiate appropriate action, but no steps had reportedly been taken so far.
Chawla said that, in compliance with the District Collector’s directions, a formal application seeking registration of an FIR would soon be submitted at the Hindumalkot police station. He added that the department would extend full cooperation to the police in identifying those involved in the incident in Punjab.
