Strong Group tapped former Kansas Jayhawks guard Remy Martin to reinforce the team as it completes the 12-man cast for its three-peat drive in the William Jones Cup slated on Aug. 8-23 in Taipei City.
The 28-year-old Filipino-American guard is one talent that Strong Group president Jacob Lao has been pursuing for years.
"Over the past four years of competing overseas, one name kept coming up wherever we went — Remy Martin. We listened. That's why we're proud to bring Remy to Strong Group," said
Jacob Lao in a statement.
"He's a proven winner, a champion, and someone we believe embodies the standard we're striving for as we continue to represent the Philippines on the international stage."
Listed at six feet tall, the explosive guard was part of the Kansas Jayhawks that won the 2022 NCAA Division I championship.
While he went undrafted in the NBA, the Filipino-American standout garnered two All-Pac-12 First Team selections and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional in 2022.
Martin has played previously in Greece and is coming off a stint in Iceland, where he saw action for Keflavík, where he averaged 16.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
"I'm pleased we finally worked things out with Remy. I've been looking to recruit him for quite some time, but our schedules just didn't align until now," said Strong Group coach Charles Tiu.
"He's really excited to come play for us, and he wants to win. I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with him."
Adding depth and size for the team is Puerto Rican forward Isaiah Piñeiro.
Listed at 6-foot-7, Piñeiro once played for the Stockton Kings in the NBA G League before going overseas to play in Latvia, Turkey, and Spain.
The other members of the team are former NBA slotman Boban Marjanović, Dave Ildefonso, DJ Fenner, Angelo Kouame, Tajuan Agee, Allen Liwag, Titing Manalili, Matthew Wright, William Navarro, and Shaun Ildefonso.
Strong Group is bunched together with Chinese Taipei Blue, Korea and Japan in the group stage.
