Study shows your high street coffee could have the same caffeine as four Red Bulls

  • A study by consumer champion Which? has revealed that caffeine levels vary across major high street coffee chains.
  • Costa’s medium cappuccino contains 325mg of caffeine —equivalent to around four cans of Red Bull and nearly three-and-a-half times as much as Starbucks’ version.
  • Costa also comes out on top for drinks including its espresso shot, which contains 100mg of caffeine per serving, and its flat white, which has 241mg.
  • Since Which?'s 2023 research, Caffe Nero's cappuccino caffeine content has doubled, and while Starbucks continue to serve the least caffeine overall across its drinks, its levels have increased in its espressos, cappuccinos and filter coffees over three years.
  • Jessica Carson, Which? health and wellbeing expert, said: “If you drink multiple cups a day or need to cut back for health reasons, pay attention to where you shop and what you order to avoid any unwanted side-effects.”
