A suspect was injured in a police encounter on Saturday after allegedly opening fire on a police team in the Sabhra area of Tarn Taran district, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surendra Lamba said that personnel from the CIA staff, Tarn Taran, and the Sabhra police post, under Sadar Patti police station, had received information about two suspects travelling on a motorcycle in the area.

Acting on the tip-off, the police team moved to intercept the suspects. However, as the officers attempted to stop them, the suspects allegedly opened fire on the police party. The police returned fire in self-defence, during which one of the suspects sustained injuries.

The injured suspect was identified as Sidakpreet Singh, a resident of Kot Budha village. His accomplice, identified as Sunny, managed to flee the scene and remains at large.

According to SSP Lamba, both suspects were allegedly involved in a recent firing incident in the Sabhra area. The injured suspect was admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Police have launched raids to apprehend the absconding suspect. SSP Lamba said that investigators expect to gather information regarding other criminal incidents in the area once both suspects are in custody.

A case has been registered by the Sadar Patti police, and further investigation is underway.
