The CIA-1 unit of the Ambala police nabbed two miscreants after a brief exchange of fire in the Mullana area late Friday evening.

The accused were identified as Monish and Riyan, brothers from Uttar Pradesh. As per a police spokesperson, Riyan suffered a bullet injury. The duo was involved in a recent cow smuggling incident in which a youth was killed under the jurisdiction of the Panjokhra police station.

CIA-1 in-charge Harjinder Singh said they received a tip-off that two suspects were riding a two-wheeler without a number plate in the Mullana area. They were carrying a weapon with an intention to commit a big crime.

Following the information, police teams were alerted and a search was launched. As the police tried to nab the suspects, they tried to speed away. During the chase, they opened fire at the CIA-1 team. Their two-wheeler rammed into a tree and they fell down. The suspect riding pillion suffered a bullet injury in the exchange of fire, the CIA-1 in-charge said.

They were taken to a private hospital, from where they were shifted to the Civil Hospital in Ambala City.

During preliminary investigation, it has come to light that the duo was involved in a cow-smuggling incident during which the accused had pelted a police party with stones and opened fire in which a youth, Gurpreet Singh, aka Happy, died of a bullet injury on May 1 night. Around 2 am, the police party was chasing a suspected vehicle near Tundla village.

A bullet hit Gurpreet, who was returning with his friend on a two-wheeler after completing his night shift. He died on the spot.

There are a several old criminal cases registered against Monish and Riyan. A weapon has been recovered from their possession, Harjinder Singh said. Monish had recently come out of jail in another case related to cow smuggling. The brothers were wanted in a case registered at Panjokhra police station. Efforts are being made to nab others involved in the case.

Ambala SP Ajit Singh Shekhawat said, “Two accused have been arrested by the CIA-1 unit last night and the remaining accused in the case will also be arrested soon. The information about the remaining accused is being obtained and verified.”
