Suzara vows brighter future for PH volleyball amid turmoil

CANDON, Ilocos Sur — Asian Volleyball Confederation president Ramon ‘Tats’ Suzara made a strong appearance at the Candon City Arena on Thursday, June 11, expressing confidence that Philippine volleyball will emerge stronger despite ongoing challenges.

The embattled Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) is currently facing sanctions from the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). Still, Suzara remains optimistic, noting that improvements are expected once the FIVB completes its assessment of the sport’s status in the country.

Looking ahead, the Philippines is set to host the women’s leg of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) from June 17 to 21 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City—an opportunity Suzara sees as crucial for the national team’s development.

Despite recent controversies, Suzara revealed that he has already initiated dialogue with Premier Volleyball League (PVL) president Ricky Palou, emphasizing unity and progress over distractions.

“We will be better. There’s more politics involved in volleyball than basketball, but we want to move forward,” Suzara said. “I spoke to Ricky Palou despite all the hearsay on social media. Let’s focus on events that will help our national team.”

Suzara also underscored the long-term vision behind hosting the VNL, saying it is part of the country’s preparations for the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in 2029.

“The reason for hosting the Women’s VNL over the next three years is to prepare for the World Championship in 2029. This will allow us to further support and develop our women’s team,” he added.
