A fire destroyed a dormitory and hall at a Johor tahfiz school, but all 15 students and three teachers inside escaped without injury.

JOHOR BAHRU: Fifteen students and three teachers escaped unhurt after a fire destroyed a dormitory and multipurpose hall at Maahad Tahfiz Sains Al Insyirah in Taman Tampoi Utama.

The blaze broke out around 4.30 pm while all occupants were on the building’s first floor attending Quranic studies.

Principal Mohamad Halimi Kolan said he heard cracking sounds from the upper floor before asking a teacher to investigate.

“I heard cracking sounds from the upper floor which houses the dormitory and hall,” he told Bernama.

He was then informed that a fire was raging with thick smoke, prompting an immediate evacuation order.

“Alhamdulillah, all are safe. The fire-resistant door also helped control the situation from spreading too quickly,” he added.

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 4.35 pm.

A fire engine from the Larkin station was dispatched to the location involving a three-storey permanent building.

Flames engulfed the top floor accommodation measuring about 30 by 30 square feet.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control and concluded operations by 6.09 pm.

No casualties were reported from the incident.
