TAWAU: The Dragon Boat Race organised by the Federation of Chinese Associations of Tawau (PPCT) which is now entering its 36th edition this year, can be elevated to an international event by also involving overseas participation.
Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said he has asked the organisers to meet the standards and criteria set for the international organisation of the competition.
“When all international criteria and standards have been met, I am confident that the Government will support events like this to be held on a larger scale,” he told reporters after officiating the race at Persiaran Traulsen, Sunday.
Nizam said the Government always comes up with various initiatives to help associations or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that want to expand, including penetrating international standards.

In another development, Nizam, who is also Apas assemblyman, said that the development of Tawau as a border town, is a matter that the State Government takes seriously.
This includes establishing a customs, immigration, quarantine and security (CIQS) complex and better road connectivity following the move of the Indonesian capital to Kalimantan.
“We have already given our opinion to the Federal Government.
“We are very grateful that the Prime Minister listened to all our complaints agreed to start allocating RM1 billion to establish a CIQS in Tawau (Kalabakan) and Sarawak which borders Indonesia.
“I was also informed that efforts to upgrade existing roads at the border of Simpang Menggaris to Tawau Township are now being considered seriously.
“I am confident that if all the planning goes smoothly, the creation of the road will be realised in the near future,” he said.
