Tawau gets RM70 million cranes

TAWAU: The acquisition of two new quay cranes worth RM70 million for Tawau Port (pic) is a strategic step to strengthen the State’s port infrastructure and support Sabah’s long-term economic growth.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the investment reflected the State Government’s commitment through Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB) to modernise critical infrastructure and boost the efficiency and competitiveness of Sabah’s ports, particularly on the East Coast.

“Once operational, these cranes are expected to increase productivity, operational reliability and overall cargo handling efficiency at Tawau Port. Their operation will also speed up vessel turnaround time, strengthen the port’s capacity to handle larger vessels and growing cargo volumes,” he said at the launch, Sunday.

Hajiji said an efficient and reliable port system is crucial in supporting the growth of key sectors, particularly export-oriented industries which contributed significantly to the state economy.

He is confident the upgrade at Tawau Port would further strengthen its role as a major maritime gateway on Sabah’s East Coast, while improving connectivity with domestic and regional markets.

He also commended Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd, Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and all parties involved for their continued commitment to enhancing the state’s maritime infrastructure in support of Sabah’s development agenda.

Suria Capital Holdings Berhad Chairman Datuk Abd Rahman Dahlan said the investment reflected the Suria Capital Group’s long-term commitment to strategic infrastructure development.

He said Tawau Port played an important role in supporting trade, industry and regional ties on Sabah’s East Coast.

“This RM70 million investment reflects our commitment to equipping the port with the infrastructure and equipment needed to meet future trade demands, thereby contributing to the economic development of Tawau and its surrounding areas,” he said.

Suria Capital Holdings Berhad and SPSB Group Managing Director Datuk Ahmad Rizal Dahli said the acquisition was part of SPSB’s ongoing efforts to modernise and strengthen Tawau Port.

He said the new cranes marked another significant advancement in the port’s development, as they would improve the efficiency and reliability of cargo handling activities, raise the quality of service to port users and support Sabah’s growing trade and logistics needs once operational.

Also present were Deputy Chief Minister III cum State Industry, Entrepreneurship and Transport Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman and Sabah Ports Authority Board Chairman Datuk Donald Mojuntin.
