CHONBURI - A kindergarten in Bang Lamung district here was closed after a teacher was shot dead by her alleged husband, who is also a police officer, on Wednesday, according to the Royal Thai Police.
Bang Lamung Police Station Chief Pol Col Sarawut Nuchanart said the incident occurred at Nong Pla Lai Municipal Kindergarten at around 11am after the suspect entered the school and shot his wife, who worked there as a teacher.
Sarawut said the suspect fled the scene after the shooting, while all 44 children at the kindergarten were safely evacuated.
"The suspect reportedly fled to his home in a nearby housing estate after the shooting before police managed to persuade him to surrender,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Sarawut said the body of the 48-year-old teacher, who had sustained a gunshot wound near her left ear, was found inside the school canteen.
He said police were still investigating the motive for the shooting after collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
The incident is the latest in a series of shooting incidents in Thailand, weeks after a fatal shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School on Aug 7, in which nine people were killed, the alleged shooting of the president of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) on Aug 10, and a shooting at a shopping event in Dan Khun Thot district on Aug 13, which left six people injured. - BERNAMA
