Thai police bust a smuggling syndicate attempting to send 205kg of methamphetamine worth RM12.26 million into Malaysia via Narathiwat and Tumpat.
PETALING JAYA: Thai authorities have foiled a syndicate’s attempt to smuggle more than 205kg of drugs worth RM12.26 million into Malaysia, following the arrest of four of its members in several raids here last Friday and Sunday, Kosmo reports.
The Narcotics Suppression Division of Police Region 9, Hat Yai Police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) Region 9 successfully thwarted the syndicate’s attempt to transport the methamphetamine from Hat Yai to Narathiwat using a courier service.
A spokesperson for the Narcotics Suppression Division of Police Region 9 said authorities received information last Friday about several packages suspected to contain drugs being sent through a courier company.
He said a suspect was arrested at about 9.30am while collecting the packages using a pick-up truck from a courier company in Ban Phru sub-district here.
“Checks found several packages containing methamphetamine in the suspect’s possession. Further investigations led to the arrest of two more suspects at their homes in Khuan Lang sub-district here.
“The first man arrested had been entrusted with delivering the drugs to the other two suspects,” he reportedly told Kosmo.
The spokesperson said one of the suspects admitted to making three deliveries involving 800kg of methamphetamine to an associate in Narathiwat, receiving between RM19,622 and RM24,528 in payment.
He said further investigations revealed that a woman was travelling from Narathiwat to collect the drugs.
“Surveillance was conducted before a 62-year-old woman, who was driving a pick-up truck, was arrested on Kanchanawanit Road here last Sunday,” he said.
The woman reportedly admitted that the 205kg of drugs were to be transported to Tak Bai Pier in Narathiwat before being smuggled into Malaysia through Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat.
