Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's recent discharge from the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur should put an end to all speculations and unwelcomed insults about his absence from the public eye.
Dr Mahathir was admitted to the Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) on January 26th this year for treatment of an infection and observation, and his discharge on 18th March indicates that he was not hiding from authorities, as some had unfairly suggested.
It is unfortunate that some columnists on this platform and individuals in social media, have chosen Dr Mahathir's absence to hurl baseless accusations about him hiding from investigations or allegations related to his children's business empire. Such accusations not only lack evidence but also disrespect the contributions of an elder statesman who has dedicated his life to serving the country.
Dr Mahathir has been a prominent figure in Malaysian politics for decades, and regardless of one's political views, he deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. His health should be a matter of concern for Malaysians from all walks of life, and it is heartening to see him on the path to recovery again.
As Dr Mahathir resumes his regular activities, it is important for the media and the public to focus on constructive dialogue and debate, rather than engaging in baseless speculation and personal attacks against this respectable leader of ours. More so during this holy month of Ramadan where we ought to observe all the enlightened moral values cherished by all religions.
Let us all wish Dr Mahathir Mohamad speedy recovery and hope for his continued health and well-being. May he continue to offer us words of wisdom in these turbulent economic times.
