Kota Kinabalu: Three major engineering organisations in Sabah will jointly host a Chinese New Year Open House on Feb 8, while addressing pressing concerns about the future of engineering in the State.

The Sabah Engineers Association (SEA), the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch and Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM) Sabah Branch are organising the annual gathering to strengthen relationships within the engineering community.

Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});The delegation included ACEMS Chairman Datuk Chin Shu Ying and Deputy Chairman Benny Song, SEA President Paul Yap and Deputy President Lo Chong Chiun and IEMS Vice Chairman KJ Tan and Honorary Treasurer Wong Chen Jack.

During their recent courtesy call to Deputy Chief Minister cum Public Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, who is expected to grace the event, leaders of the three organisations discussed critical challenges facing the profession, particularly the shortage of young engineers and brain drain of experienced professionals.

Read more “The acute lack of young engineers in the job market poses a threat to the supply of needed specialised skills to ensure continuance in the profession,” they said, noting that the situation is particularly concerning given various pending projects in Sabah.

Meanwhile, Shahelmey urged the engineering fraternity to increase efforts in promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) learning and creating opportunities to showcase the merits of the engineering profession to younger generations.

The upcoming Chinese New Year gathering will feature traditional lion dance performances and serve as a platform for engineers and their families to welcome the New Year together.
