A day after The Tribune highlighted the dilapidated condition of Paror bridge over the Neugal river on the Pathankot-Mandi NH, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) sprang into action and filled the big potholes with bitumen last night.
According to official sources, after the matter came to the notice of NHAI state head Col Ajay Singh, he directed the authorities at Palampur to immediately start repair work on the highway. The NHAI personnel undertook the repair at night and filled the deep potholes that had become a safety hazard for motorists.
The damaged stretch had emerged as a “black spot” on the highway, with several road accidents being reported in the past. Two-wheeler riders and drivers travelling during night were particularly at risk due to the bad condition of the road.
Welcoming the prompt response from the NHAI, locals and commuters said the repair would reduce the risk of accidents on the busy stretch, which connects Palampur with the neighbouring areas.
Talking to The Tribune, Col Ajay Singh said NHAI would continue to monitor the condition of the bridge and undertake maintenance work whenever required to ensure the smooth and safe movement of traffic.
Commuters can bring safety concerns on the Pathankot-Mandi NH to his or his subordinates’ notice at Palampur, he said, while assuring timely action.
