The US state defying a nationwide outbreak of explosive diarrhea

  • California health officials have confirmed that Southern California is not currently experiencing an increase in cyclosporiasis cases or local outbreaks, despite surges in other parts of the nation like Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
  • The state has reported 41 provisional cases from January to June 2026, which is a decrease from 80 cases during the same period in 2025 and falls within the annual average of 106 cases from 2015-2025.
  • Dr. Erica Pan, CDPH Director, stated that California's 2026 case numbers are within expected ranges, with a majority of cases acquired internationally, and the state is closely monitoring for any signs of locally acquired infection.
  • Cyclosporiasis - which can present as diarrhea - is an intestinal illness caused by a parasite, typically transmitted through food or water contaminated with human faeces, with person-to-person transmission being unlikely.
  • The California Department of Public Health advises residents to practice safe food handling, thoroughly wash produce, and is tracking cases associated with travel to affected Eastern and Midwestern states.
