An accused in a theft case died after jumping from the third floor of the Gurdaspur judicial complex while attempting to escape police custody.

The incident occurred when he was being produced in a court. In a sudden move, he took the extreme step of jumping from a considerable height. The police immediately rushed him to the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him “brought dead”.

The deceased has been identified as Arun Gill (28), a resident of Mehtabpur village.

DSP Shahbaz and SHO (city police station) Davinder Parkash reached the court complex soon after receiving information about the incident, which took place around 2.30 pm.

Gill had been arrested on May 19 in connection with a theft at the house of Balwinder Pal, the sarpanch of Dauwal village, under the jurisdiction of the Purana Shala police station. He was accused of stealing Rs 5 lakh in cash and 15 tolas of gold jewellery.

Police sources claimed that Gill was a drug addict.
