Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court here Monday sentenced two men to jail for committing theft.

Putra Zainudin, 18, and Majid Amin, 47, pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to the charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and liability of a fine, on conviction.

Jobless Putra was jailed seven days’ from Monday for stealing RM128 cash from Tan Pei Shing on July 8, at 4.30pm, in a laundry outlet in Penampang.

Technician Majid was handed three days jail, also from Monday, for stealing two packets of instant Horlick drink worth RM60 on Aug 14, at 2.45pm, at CKS Supermarket in Telipok.

Read more In Putra’s case, Deputy Public Prosecutor Atiqah Nazihah Azmi informed the court that he was seen on the shop’s CCTV stealing cash from the table.

Putra was arrested by the police on July 19 and the cash was not recovered, said the prosecution.

In Majid’s case, the court was informed that he was also seen on CCTV stuffing two packets of items into his sling bag and walking out without paying.

The court heard that Majid was arrested on the same day behind the premises and the condition of the exhibits was still intact.

Putra, who was not represented, requested a lenient sentence and wished to be sentenced on Monday without the social report being prepared.

Counsel Lim Ming Zoong, representing Majid, requested leniency as he was married with two children.

The prosecution applied an appropriate sentence for both men.
