Two thieves allegedly tied doors of multiple houses shut using ropes to steal batteries from at least four e-rickshaws parked on Gulchaman street, the police said.
The incident was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in the area. The police have taken possession of the footage and are using it to identify the suspects.
Mayank Kapoor, a resident of the area, said an e-rickshaw belonging to his acquaintance was parked near his house. When the owner arrived to pick up the e-rickshaw in the morning, he found the battery box broken into and the battery missing.
In the CCTV footage, two suspects can be seen committing the crime around 2.45 am. Both of them had their faces covered. While one of them was riding a scooter, the other was seen tying ropes outside people’s homes.
Locals expressed suspicion the accused were armed with sharp-edged weapons and a double-barrel gun. The scooter used during the crime did not have registration plates.
Vikram Kapoor, a resident of the area, said that his father had recently passed away and the latter’s e-rickshaw remained parked in the neighbourhood. Its battery was also stolen.
Calls for more patrolling
