Thousands join record-breaking human wave attempt in Mexico City ahead of World Cup

Thousands of people gathered along one of Mexico City's main avenues on Saturday in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the world's largest human wave.

Aerial footage showed participants raising their arms in unison as the wave stretched for nearly a kilometre through the capital.

Many attendees wore football jerseys and waved Mexican flags as excitement builds ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in just a few days.

The event also featured traditional dancers and performers in World Cup-themed Day of the Dead costumes, combining football fever with Mexican culture in a colourful public celebration.
