Speaking during the launch, Windsor said football continues to unite communities and create unforgettable moments for fans.

“Sports have always been a bridge that connects communities, and football holds a special place in our hearts. Events like this don’t just celebrate the players, they celebrate fans, whose passion and love for the game make football truly unforgettable,” he said, adding that the match also carries a deeper message beyond football.

He also added that the legends will be prepared to play and give fans an entertaining game despite the humidity in Malaysia.

“So, preparation-wise, I think once a professional, always a professional, and they will be here to cross that white line and make it a proper game, because that passion doesn’t go from when you were 16 to 45 plus,” he added.

Former Liverpool captain and skipper Steven Gerrard, who was also unveiled as part of the event, described the AllStar Legends experience as unique and said he is excited to meet fans ahead of the game.

“Even though it’s a short time, it’s great to be here,” he added.

While speaking during the press conference, the Liverpool skipper highlighted Malaysia’s growing importance in the global football landscape, especially in terms of commercial value and fan engagement.

Responding to a question on how significant Malaysia is to global football today, Gerrard pointed to the strong passion for the sport and the increasing global visibility of the country.

“You can see the passion, you can feel it. And when I arrived at the airport this morning, the first thing you saw was Liverpool,” he said, noting how deeply football culture is already present in Malaysia.

He added that global media reach has made such destinations even more meaningful for players and ex-players alike.

Gerrard also said that exhibition matches like the AllStar Legends provide a valuable opportunity for former professionals to connect with fans worldwide and give back to cities that support the game.

“A lot of ex-players, when these games, these opportunities come up, we’re really excited to come and see all the races and compete,” he said, emphasising how such events continue to strengthen football’s global connection.

Meanwhile, he also reflected on some of the best players he shared the pitch with and competed against during his illustrious Premier League career. When asked to name several standout players, Gerrard listed names such as Dudek, Xabi Alonso, Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler among those he admired most.

“For three or four years, he was arguably the best player in the Premier League,” Gerrard said when speaking about Fowler, while adding that there were “numerous players” he could mention from across different generations of football.

He also highlighted several other stars, including Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes, describing them as “all world-class players.”

Gerrard added that events like the AllStar Legends match give retired footballers a chance to relive the competitive atmosphere they once thrived in.

More player announcements and ticketing details are expected to be revealed closer to the event date. Organisers also said exclusive merchandise will be made available online for fans.

Held under the tagline “Rise Above All,” the event aims to bring football fans together through their shared passion for the sport. - May 8, 2026
