Tokyo Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs clocked the third-fastest 100 metres in athletics history late on Wednesday, but his tailwind was too strong for it to fully count.
The Italian, who won gold at the Tokyo Games in 2021, was timed at 9.67 seconds in Eisenstadt, Austria. The tailwind was 4.1 metres per second. Only 2 metres per second is permitted for the official record.
Only Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt has been faster than Jacobs and he did so under legal conditions.
Bolt's world record from the Athletics World Championships in Berlin has stood at 9.58 seconds since 2009. In 2012 in London, the now-retired Bolt won Olympic gold in 9.63 seconds.
