Tour bus and lorry destroyed in separate highway fires, no casualties reported

A TOUR bus was almost entirely destroyed in a fire along Kilometre 20.2 of the Maju Expressway (MEX) near Serdang this morning, but all 12 passengers and the driver managed to escape unharmed.

According to Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar, a team from the Seri Kembangan Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at 8.25am.

“The operations commander reported that the fire had engulfed the bus upon arrival, destroying 90 per cent of the vehicle.

“All 12 passengers and the driver successfully exited the bus before the rescue team arrived,” he said in a statement.

He confirmed that no injuries were reported, and passengers were subsequently transferred to another bus to continue their journey.

In a separate incident earlier in the day, a lorry transporting tents was also destroyed in a fire along Exit 803 of the Kuala Lumpur–Karak Expressway.

Ahmad Mukhlis said his department received a distress call at 7.24am. A fire engine and crew from the Selayang Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched, arriving at the location by 8.08am after a 35-kilometre journey.

“The operations commander reported that the 10-tonne lorry carrying tents was 90 per cent destroyed by the fire,” he said.

The blaze was successfully extinguished shortly after, and no casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Highway Authority stated in a Facebook post that, as of 8.28am, the left lane at KM35.1 of the KL-Karak Expressway remained obstructed. - July 16, 2025
