KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — A suspicious plastic box found unattended in front of a shoplot in Bandar Baru Sri Petaling earlier today contained toy building blocks after a police bomb disposal unit was called to the scene.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Commissioner Datuk Fadil Marsus said authorities were alerted to the box at about 12.57pm after a 33-year-old woman reported the discovery.

“Initial checks found that the object had a high radiation reading, which prompted the deployment of a Bomb Disposal Unit, together with the Bukit Aman Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Unit, to the scene for further checks and evaluation,” he said.

Representatives from the Malaysian Nuclear Agency were also present.

"The Bomb Disposal Unit then used a Recoilless Disruptor 5.0, an explosive ordnance disposal device, to destroy the suspicious object before discovering several boxes believed to contain colourful building blocks inside the plastic box," he said in a statement here.

He said further checks by the Malaysian Nuclear Agency later confirmed that there were no traces of radioactivity in the vicinity.

Fadil said the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

"The public is also advised not to spread false information that could cause public unrest," he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-21159999 or the Brickfields police hotline at 03-22979222 or any nearby police stations.
