SHAH ALAM - A suspicious box that triggered a bomb scare in Sri Petaling today was destroyed by police after initial checks recorded relatively high radiation readings, only for several boxes of colourful Lego-like building blocks to be found inside.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said police were alerted to the box, which had been left outside a shop, by a 33-year-old woman at 12.57pm.
He said preliminary checks detected relatively high radiation readings from the object, prompting several specialist units to be deployed to the scene.
"The Kuala Lumpur police Bomb Disposal Unit, Bukit Aman's Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) Unit and the Malaysian Nuclear Agency were subsequently called in to conduct further checks and assessments.
"The Bomb Disposal Unit then used a Recoilless Disruptor 5.0 to destroy the suspected object.
“Several boxes suspected to contain colourful building-block items (Lego) inside the box were found and successfully destroyed,” he said in a statement today.
Fadil added that subsequent checks by the Atomic Energy Department found no radioactive readings at the scene.
Police have since opened an investigation under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.
“We have opened an investigation paper under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. The case is still under investigation,” he said.
Earlier, Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook arrived shortly after police received information about the incident and monitored the situation.
The incident triggered concern in the busy commercial area, with police cordoning off the location as bomb disposal and emergency personnel carried out their assessment.
Videos and photographs shared on social media showed police vehicles and Fire and Rescue Department personnel at the scene, while members of the public watched the operation from outside the cordoned-off area.
Several social media posts initially described the incident as a bomb threat, with some users sharing footage of bomb disposal personnel operating near a TNB feeder pillar.
The operation appeared to have taken place along Jalan Radin Bagus, with traffic congestion reported as vehicles were diverted away from the area. Businesses nearby also temporarily suspended operations while the assessment was carried out.
Fadil urged the public not to spread false information that could cause unnecessary alarm or threaten public safety.
