A tragic incident unfolded today along Jalan Gunung Keriang, resulting in the untimely death of a 19-year-old girl and serious injuries to her five-year-old brother. The siblings, residents of Alor Janggus, were riding a motorcycle when it collided with a lorry, sending shockwaves through the community.

According to ACP Ahmad Shukri Mat Akhir, the Kota Setar police chief, the accident occurred around 2:10 pm. Initial reports indicate that the motorcycle, carrying the siblings, was travelling from the Alor Janggus traffic light towards the Gunung Keriang traffic light. Meanwhile, a lorry, driven by a 59-year-old man, approached from the Jalan Minitar junction.

Tragically, the collision transpired when the teenage girl's motorcycle collided with the rear left side of the lorry. Despite efforts to avoid the oncoming vehicle, the sudden movement of the lorry left the victim with no time to react. The impact proved fatal for the teenager, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her younger brother suffered a head injury and was promptly transported to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

In the wake of the accident, the driver of the lorry, who voluntarily surrendered to authorities, has been detained pending further investigation. The authorities have launched an inquiry into the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, focusing on the aspect of reckless driving.

As the community grapples with the devastating loss of a young life and prays for the swift recovery of the injured child, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. It underscores the need for vigilance and responsible driving behaviour among motorists to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

The untimely demise of the teenage girl has cast a pall of sorrow over Alor Janggus and beyond. As friends, family, and neighbours mourn the loss, they are reminded to cherish every moment with their loved ones and to prioritize safety on the roads. Let us honour the memory of the departed by advocating for greater road safety measures and fostering a culture of responsibility behind the wheel.
