Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United are among those to watch in the finals days of the January transfer window as clubs in the Premier League and across the world look to wrap up deals before the deadline, while Chelsea’s late interest in Alejandro Garnacho could unlock a series of moves.

The Gunners are desperate to sign a striker and though a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko looks unlikely this month Mikel Arteta’s side are still pursuing the forward. Wolves’ Matheus Cunha is seen as an alternative should they not manage to secure Sesko, while Arsenal lead the race for Norwegian starlet Sverre Nypan.

Elsewhere, Manchester City announced the signing of Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, and are in the market for a defensive midfielder to continue Pep Guardiola’s rebuild.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have opened talks with Lecce for defender Patrick Dorgu but the club need to sell to buy, with Garnacho possibly on the way out and Antony offloaded on loan to Real Betis. Marcus Rashford is also searching for a move away from Old Trafford, with his representative having met Barcelona executives, though a move away is not currently looking likely.

Follow all the latest news, rumours and deals below, plus analysis on the done deals and where new signings will fit into the starting line-ups:

Mike Jones

For most of the window Arsenal have been trying to get a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko over the line.

The German club have not been forthcoming over a fee or the possibility of a transfer as they rate Sesko’s skills highly.

Currently fifth in the Bundesliga, Leipzig know how much a Champions League place would be worth to them and they believe Sesko is a key factor in them maintaining or even improving their position in the table.

As such they are reluctant to let the forward leave this month and Arsenal will have to pivot their attention to other options.

Mike Jones

Brentford are considering a move for Barcelona's Andreas Christensen, as manager Thomas Frank looks at whether he can improve his defensive options this January. The Camp Nou hierarchy want to make outgoings to meet financial restrictions but it is understood the former Chelsea centre-half wants to fight for his place.

Christensen has been injured for much of the season, meaning he has only made one league appearance. While the 28-year-old is intent on reclaiming his place, Barca's financial situation has meant clubs are willing to test whether a deal is possible.

The damning, final truth of Antony’s Manchester United nightmare

16:37

,

Mike Jones

Ruben Amorim was discussing a forward he doesn’t pick.

He would, he said on Sunday, be willing to put his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach on the bench ahead of him if he didn’t give the maximum in training.

It wasn’t Antony; Marcus Rashford was the man damned by comparison with Jorge Vital. Although a spot on the bench has already opened up. The temptation is to suggest the veteran Vital would be of similar use to Antony as a substitute.

Khusanov’s Man City debut from hell salvaged by even greater Chelsea gaffes

15:48

,

Mike Jones

On a night of mistakes, the first was the worst but not the costliest. And for that, Abdukodir Khusanov could thank Robert Sanchez. The £33m defender’s Manchester City career may yet be defined by the opening few minutes but a traumatised figure ultimately ended a winner.

First impressions can prove deceptive, and he must hope so, but Sanchez, 17 months into a seven-year contract, again looked a liability whose latest blunder allowed Erling Haaland to score in a turnaround. City, seemingly beginning with the potential to descend into crisis, ended up victorious to leapfrog Chelsea.

,

Mike Jones

Burn said: "It's for the owners to say but he's priceless to us. I hope he does well but not too well.

"The way he moves...you come up against special players but there's nobody out there that dribbles the way he dribbles.

"Even Allan Saint-Maximin was something different and he was probably the best dribbler I've ever played with. Even the quality, it's not just dribbling for the sake of it.

"He's on fire at the moment, probably one of the best strikers in the world at the moment.

"It's hard because it's hard to defend just the way he moves. He moves his feet quickly but his top half doesn't really move."

"If we can then add some players to improve the squad we have to do it, but how we are performing, we’re in the right way."

The result took Arsenal back up to third in the 36-team table with the top eight assured of avoiding a two-legged knockout clash to reach the next phase.

Rashford, who has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford during the January transfer window, has not featured for United since a 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League back in December.

The Red Devils have played 11 matches across all competitions since then with Rashford not even being included as a substitute.

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation is a farcical problem Enzo Maresca must solve

11:15

,

Mike Jones

Chelsea signed a goalkeeper in August 2022. Then two more in August 2023. Then another in July 2024. They already owned the world’s most expensive goalkeeper. When their owners, Clearlake Capital, bought the club in 2022, they also inherited the reigning world goalkeeper of the year, according to Fifa’s annual awards. Chelsea have eight senior goalkeepers and, it is ever more apparent, they need a new goalkeeper. Or, at the least, a change of goalkeeper.

But Robert Sanchez’s latest mishap shone a light on Chelsea’s farcical goalkeeping situation; in turn, it indicates why they are still more of an expensive experiment than achievers on the pitch. Sanchez thumped the ground in frustration after Erling Haaland put Manchester City ahead on Saturday: a piece of turf he would not have been near but for his ill-advised decision to leave his goal empty.

09:52

,

Mike Jones

Ange Postecoglou has again stressed the importance of Tottenham being active in the final days of the January transfer window, but is hopeful of movement after the European league phase ends next week.

Asked if the league phase of European football finishing on 30 January may spark a busy end to the transfer window, Postecoglou admitted: "Yeah, potentially.

"I mean I really think that has been a factor because if you look at the way European competitions are stacked up, that would be done and dusted by now and people would know if they are in the Champions League or if they are in the Europa League and adjusted their sights.

"Maybe after last night and I've had a close look at the three-page table, thankfully we're on the first so I don't need to go beyond that, but if there is any significant clubs in there and out of the competition, it may make things happen a little bit quicker.

"It's not just about bringing in another body, but yeah, there is still no doubt we need to help these players because we've still got some significant games in the next two or three weeks before we get players back.”

A loan move hasn’t been ruled out.
