Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United are among those to watch in the finals days of the January transfer window as clubs in the Premier League and across the world look to wrap up deals before the deadline, while Chelsea’s late interest in Alejandro Garnacho could unlock a series of moves.

The Gunners are desperate to sign a striker but a move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko looks unlikely this month, with Mikel Arteta’s side chasing Matheus Cunha as an alternative.

Elsewhere, Manchester City announced the signing of Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush, while the Blues are in talks with Juventus for striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Manchester United have opened talks with Lecce for defender Patrick Dorgu as Ruben Amorim prioritises signing a left back. But the club need to sell to buy, with Garnacho and Antony set to leave.

Marcus Rashford is also looking for a move away from Old Trafford, with his representative having met Barcelona executives, though a move away is not currently looking likely.

Follow all the latest news, rumours and deals below, plus analysis on the done deals and where new signings will fit into the starting line-ups:

Arsenal avoid the pitfalls of European rivals with cruise through Champions League

Thursday 23 January 2025 22:30

,

Chris Wilson

Arsenal do as much as they can, which means it is close to impossible for anyone else to do enough to prevent their safe passage into the Champions League last eight. Uefa are hoping for what might be a satisfyingly wild night next Wednesday, but some of it does sound a little absurd.

If Arsenal fail to get a point in Girona, all of Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, AS Monaco, Lille, Brest and Feyenoord would have to win by massive margins to have any chance of forcing them into the play-offs.

In short, they’re there, as was always expected before this 3-0 victory over a dogged Dinamo Zagreb. The game really became about correcting a few ongoing issues in the team, and the only thing Mikel Arteta could really have had any quibble with was that they could have taken more chances given recent goal-shyness. The manner of the goals – by Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and a first in months for Martin Odegaard – was nevertheless encouraging.

Mike Jones

Manchester City are considering re-signing Douglas Luiz from Juventusas they look to the Brazil midfielder to cover for the absence of the injured Rodri.

Douglas Luiz is on City’s January shortlist, though it is far from certain that they will bring in a midfielder during a busy month in the transfer window.

City, who have ruled out moves this month for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes, are only interested in a loan move for the former Aston Villa midfielder, with Rodri set to return to fitness in the summer.

It is also thought that a deal for Nuno Mendes is off the cards at present.

09:43

,

Mike Jones

PSG defender Milan Skriniar looks like he could be on his way out of the club, having not even been included in the squad to face Manchester City tonight.

Fabrizio Romano reports that “Tottenham asked for deal conditions days ago” regarding Skriniar, while Napoli and Galatasaray are alternative options.

It is not clear how much PSG would demand for the 29-year-old.

09:31

,

Mike Jones

Fenerbahce have agreed a deal to sign Aston Villa defender Diego Carlos.

The Brazilian centre-back, who joined Villa from Sevilla in 2022, will travel to Istanbul for a medical and to discuss personal terms.

Carlos has not been involved in the last five matches for Villa and the news of his impending exit was announced by the Turkish club while Villa were in Champions League action against Monaco.

“Our club has reached an agreement in principle with the club for the transfer of Diego Carlos, who plays for Aston Villa,” Fenerbahce said in a statement on X.

“The Brazilian player has been invited to Istanbul for health checks and to further the transfer negotiations.”

Barring any hitches in the next few days, Carlos will join Jose Mourinho’s side for a reported 10m euros (£8.45m) in their push for the Turkish Super Lig title.

He played 58 times for the Premier League outfit and scored one goal.

09:18

,

Mike Jones

According to Sky Sports, RB Leipzig are targeting a move for Southampton forward Tyler Dibling.

Florian Plettenberg says that the German side “are willing to pay €30m for the winger”.

However, “Southampton want significantly more” than that fee, as they believe the 18-year-old will develop into a top player.

The Saints are also hoping to extend Dibling’s contract beyond the current deal, which runs until 2027.

Borussia Dortmund exit talks over Marcus Rashford move after key stumbling block

09:11

,

Jack Rathborn

Borussia Dortmund have walked away from talks to sign Marcus Rashford from Manchester United, reports the Mail.

The Bundesliga side were interested in the 27-year-old, but the England forward’s huge wages, thought to be in the range of £350,000-per-week, have proven to be a key stumbling block.

Dortmund could turn their attention to Brentford’s Kevin Schade, but the Bees would demand a big fee thought to be worth £45m.

Chelsea consider Alejandro Garnacho bid

08:58

,

Jack Rathborn

Chelsea are considering a bid for Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho, reports Sky Sports.

Garnacho played the entire match against Rangers on Thursday, with Ruben Amorim addressing his future.

"He's playing for Manchester United," he said when asked whether he may have played his final game for the club. "He was really important for us today. Let's see in the next days.

"I think he's improving in every aspect of the game. He was better today playing inside and also outside, changing positions. He's improving the recovery position. You can see it.

"For the whole 90 minutes, he's always there recovering and helping. Sometimes showing some frustration is really good because he wants more."

And now Sky Sports claim a bid could arrive from the Blues, with Mykhailo Mudryk provisionally suspended by the Football Association in December and neither Christopher Nkunku or Joao Felix able to find their best form.

Seering pace and plenty of goals: Can Omar Marmoush fill the Man City void left by Julian Alvarez?

08:00

,

Chris Wilson

Around 36 hours before Omar Marmoush was announced as Manchester City’s third signing in four days, the case for him had never seemed stronger. There was more than one dramatic comeback in the Champions League this week and, as they prepared for what proved a shellacking at Paris Saint-Germain, City may have noted the scoreline from Spain: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen, with both of the victors’ goals by Julian Alvarez.

They took his tally to 16 goals for the season, nine in his last 12 outings. Pep Guardiola has a policy of letting players leave if they want to and Atletico’s £82m offer was persuasive, but the Argentinian was a favourite of the City manager. He left a void that Marmoush will be charged with filling, of being a Swiss army knife of an attacking option: starter and substitute, striker and No 10 and player who can come inside from a starting berth on the sides, a sidekick for Erling Haaland or a deputy for him. Full of pace and goals, Marmoush may be better equipped than Alvarez for the job of a quasi-winger; that never suited the World Cup winner, but his work rate was such that Guardiola even employed him as a No 8 on occasion.

Mikel Arteta keen on warm-weather camp for Arsenal after ‘super-busy schedule’

07:15

,

Chris Wilson

Arsenal are close to formalising a warm-weather training camp in Dubai following their emphatic 3-0 victory over Dinamo Zagreb which put them on the brink of automatic qualification for the Champions League last 16.

Declan Rice, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard scored in a comfortable win at the Emirates Stadium which meant Arsenal could even afford to lose their final group fixture in Girona next week and still be assured of a direct passage through to the next phase.

Arsenal will face Newcastle in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at St James’ Park on February 5.

Calamitous Manchester City crash towards the unthinkable as PSG strike critical Champions League blow

07:00

,

Chris Wilson

Now Manchester City are found on the wrong side of the dotted line. With a game to go, they have sunk to their lowest point. Crowned officially the best team in Europe 19 months ago, the standings say they are now only the 25th finest in this competition. Pep Guardiola believes a table with a surreal look tells a truth. “Of course,” he said. “It’s the points we had.”

City were not merely beaten by Paris Saint-Germain. They were battered, their flaws highlighted by the team who had looked the Champions League’s greatest underachievers. City were overpowered, overrun, overcome. Collapsing, capitulating, they met their match in Paris. “They were better,” said Guardiola. “They were quicker, faster, they win the duels with the ball.”

“With Pep, his technical staff and the world-class facilities here, players have everything they need to improve. That was really enticing for me when I had the chance to come here.

“And I cannot deny I also want to win trophies. City have been the most successful club in England for many, many years, so I know I am joining a winning environment and winning culture.

“I want to learn from the staff and my teammates, and I want to become a valued member of this winning team,” he added.

The Catalan clubs need to “create salary space” in order to sign Rashford, but they are “having issues trimming the squad”, with Eric Garcia having decided to stay and Ansu Fati not wanting to leave.

Reddy does not rule out a move though, saying it would be “opportunistic” and late in the window if it were to happen.

An own goal five minutes from time gave Celtic a 1-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League and took the Scottish side past the competition’s group stage for the first time in 12 years.

The ball rebounded into the net off the shin of Young Boys captain Loris Benito after Celtic substitute Adam Idah had an effort save by goalkeeper Marvin Keller, ending a frustrating night for the Scottish side who missed a penalty and had two efforts ruled out for offside.

They are now guaranteed a place in the knockout round playoffs. Celtic looked headed for a draw that would have severely dented their hopes but their fortunes turned dramatically to the delight of the Celtic Park crowd.

That has seen him attract interest from a number of Premier League clubs during the current transfer window, with Nottingham Forest and Arsenal said to be considering bids.

Ruben Amorim admits he went too far with ‘worst Manchester United team’ comments

As United kick off at Old Trafford...

Ruben Amorim admitted frustration got the better of him when he described his Manchester United side as perhaps the worst in the club’s history in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s 3-1 home defeat by Brighton.

Amorim knew he was making headlines when he said during his post-match press conference at Old Trafford that his side are “the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United”, having just watched them suffer a sixth home defeat of the season to remain stuck in 13th in the Premier League.

The 39-year-old’s frustration was such that he reportedly broke a television in the home dressing room.

Ruben Amorim was wrong - but pound for pound, Manchester United are the worst team in the world

Thursday 23 January 2025 19:30

,

Chris Wilson

Ruben Amorim was wrong. And if there may be a broader concern that Amorim is wrong, in trying to impose a system on a group of players who look ill-suited to it, on trying to change too much too soon, in simply being the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time, his assessment of a floundering Manchester United was incorrect.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” he said, adding a flourish. “Here you go: your headlines.” And when the manager makes that admission, the headlines follow. Where they might have been about a 3-1 Old Trafford defeat to Brighton, they take on a wider status. They become a greater statement of failure.

Amorim may have failed the history test. His United are set to prove their worst team in the Premier League era. By some distance, too.

City lead January spending

Thursday 23 January 2025 19:00

According to Sky Sports, Premier League clubs have already doubled their spending compared to the January window of last year.

Top-flight sides spent £116.2m in January 2024, while the current total for 2025 is up to over £234m.

Manchester City alone have spent £126.1m so far this month, having signed Omar Marmoush (£63.2m), Vitor Reis (£29.4m) and Abdukodir Khusanov (£33.5m).

The Citizens are also reportedly looking at a deal for Andrea Cambiaso – who could cost around £67m – as well as midfield targets.

Several other clubs are looking to do business this month before the window closes on 3 February, so expect the current total to climb considerably.

Manchester City accused of ‘tapping up’ 18-year-old centre-back prospect

Manchester City have been accused of tapping up teenage defender Juma Bah by his club Real Valladolid.

The Spanish side say the 18-year-old and his agent told them on Tuesday he would be unilaterally terminating his contract and that the player from Sierra Leone then failed to report for training on Wednesday morning.

Valladolid say City are "behind this decision" and "advised the player to take this route".

The club said they were told by the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Wednesday that the funds needed to activate the termination clause in Bah's contract had been paid.
