The summer transfer window rolls on as Premier League clubs and those around Europe look to add to their squads.

Arsenal's negotiations for Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres have stalled over a difference in overall value and terms. However, Gyokeres appears to be taking action over the impasse, with the Sweden striker having refused to show up to Sporting training, while Arsenal have also been busy in agreeing a deal for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke.

Tottenham have been busy and have aggressively backed new manager Thomas Frank with a deal for West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, but despite triggering the release clause for Morgan Gibbs-White, Nottingham Forest are now considering legal action over what they believe to be an illegal approach.

Manchester United secured Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m early in this window but a subsequent deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo has been slow to develop, while the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho remain at the club despite pushing for a fresh start this summer.

Jack Grealish has been linked with a move away from Man City.

With Pep Guardiola investing heavily in the squad over the last two windows, Grealish could find himself on the way out this summer.

"I love Man City more than anything, and you know what I love more than anything, City fans, they're the best fans in the world."

What Tottenham’s spending spree tells us about new-look Spurs under Thomas Frank

13:16

,

Jack Rathborn

As Thomas Frank gave his first thoughts on the Tottenham team he has taken over, the temptation was to assume his initial recruitment drive would be focused on the defensive half of his new side.

"They've clearly shown over the last two seasons that the ability to score goals is fantastic,” he said; the numbers showed Tottenham scored as many times in finishing 17th in the Premier League as Chelsea did in coming fourth. “I know the ethos and the history of the club is massive on attacking football, and I think there's so much attacking talent in the squad.”

A month on, there seems to be rather more attacking talent. Frank’s first major signing, albeit after a loan that meant he was part of the squad the Dane inherited, was Mathys Tel. His second – albeit after the £5m acquisition of the young Japanese defender Kota Takei – was Mohammed Kudus. His third, despite Nottingham Forest’s complaints about Spurs’ approach and suggestions of legal action, could be Morgan Gibbs-White. It would amount to a £150m overhaul to Tottenham’s creative contingent; a £150m upgrade, perhaps. At 20, 24 and 25, they look the shape of Spurs’ future.

Matheus Cunha ‘privileged’ to take on Manchester United number 10 shirt

12:50

,

Jack Rathborn

“I can mention many players that use this shirt. It’s so easy for me,” Cunha said after being confirmed as the new No 10 for Man United.

“Of course, I think the one that I always think about when I see this number in this shirt for me was Wayne Rooney.

“He was someone that I grew up to watch play and I have (watched) many games now.

“Then I swapped shirts with Marcus (Rashford, after a game) also. I have his shirt in my home. But, of course, we know many players used this shirt – Van Nistelrooy, Ibrahimovic.

“It’s the dream not only to use the shirt, but with all the history they have around the number, it’s something beautiful that I have the privilege to do.”

Bukayo Saka’s back-up or Gabriel Martinelli’s replacement? How Noni Madueke will fit in at Arsenal

12:36

,

Jack Rathborn

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is on the verge of joining Arsenal in a deal worth around £50m.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has given the green light to the deal for the 23-year-old, who has impressed in spells at Stamford Bridge.

Madueke regularly featured on the right wing for the Blues but, along with many other members of the squad, found continuity hard to come by, and he will leave with many fans thinking he never got the time to really show what he could do in west London.

Here, The Independent looks at how Madueke might fit into the Arsenal team, and whether we can expect the youngster to be a starting player right away.

Christian Norgaard to fulfil Champions League ‘childhood dream’ as he completes Arsenal move

12:26

,

Jack Rathborn

Christian Norgaard has admitted he thought his dream of playing for Arsenal had passed him by after completing his £10million switch from Brentford.

The 31-year-old midfielder is understood to have signed a two-year deal at the Emirates with the option of a third season. The transfer, Arsenal’s third of the summer so far, could rise to as much as £15million with performance-related add-ons.

“You can get almost emotional because maybe it was a dream that I’ve given a little bit up on coming towards the later stage in my career,” said Norgaard.

“I’ve just turned 31 and had signed a new deal with Brentford. Of course, there’s always a little chance that a miracle could happen with Brentford, but it was probably unrealistic to play Champions League with them.

“Now, I get to hear the anthem and be a part of a Champions League campaign. It’s a childhood dream and something I didn’t think would be possible. So it’s something I’m really, really happy about.”

Brighton’s shrewd recruitment has set up Chelsea’s success — but they risk making the same mistake

12:03

,

Jack Rathborn

One of the more famous headlines after Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit combined for the third goal in Brazil’s defeat at the Stade de France in 1998 was “Arsenal win the World Cup”. Perhaps some in Sussex will be tempted to script a sequel on Sunday. “Brighton win the Club World Cup”? It would have sounded especially unlikely in the 1990s, when they were battling relegation from the Football League or exiled to play their home games in Gillingham.

It wouldn’t be strictly true now but Chelsea’s two goals in the semi-final came from Joao Pedro, who started July as a Brighton and Hove Albion player. He has made an increasingly familiar journey. The joke, if not a particularly new one, is that it would have been cheaper for Chelsea simply to buy Brighton than to carry on paying them for personnel. At £115m, Moises Caicedo cost a British record fee. At £62.5m, Marc Cucurella is another of Albion’s three biggest ever sales: all were to Chelsea.

11:36

But City will hold firm, reports the Mail, as they value the 22-year-old at closer to £40m.

Rio Ferdinand warns Man United left with one choice over Bryan Mbeumo transfer pursuit

“Man United need to find a way of meeting Brentford's valuation,” Ferdinand said on Rio Ferdinand Presents.

Everton, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth battle for Belgian winger

Jack Rathborn

Mohammed Kudus’s Tottenham transfer is the end result of West Ham’s spending disasters

10:54

,

Jack Rathborn

There are times when West Ham fans may catch the sight of one of their finest former players in action for capital rivals and hear a chant about getting him half price. It involves an element of exaggeration: Declan Rice commanded a British record fee of £105m and even a brace of superlative free kicks against Real Madrid do not make him worth £210m.

And yet there could be a sequel of sorts, Hammers supporters casting more envious glances at another favourite found elsewhere in London. And if, as seems likely, Mohammed Kudus joins Tottenham for £55m, there may be greater reasons to think West Ham have sold him on the cheap. Certainly in the context of the Ghanaian’s talent and his outstanding, 14-goal debut campaign in England, if not the underwhelming, five-goal sophomore season.

But the fee is £30m below Kudus’ release clause and there have been moments, with an ability to spin or glide away from defenders, to finish clinically or spectacularly, when that £85m has looked a realistic valuation.

09:43

Jack Rathborn

Juventus have struck a deal with Manchester United to sign Jadon Sancho for £17.3m.

La Stampa reports a deal for the former Chelsea loanee has come amid negotiations between the player and Man United to find a severance package.

Noni Madueke leaves Club World Cup camp to complete Arsenal move, Enzo Maresca confirms

09:31

,

Jack Rathborn

Enzo Maresca has all but confirmed Noni Madueke’s imminent switch Arsenal after revealing that the winger has left the Chelsea camp ahead of the Club World Cup final.

Madueke looks set to become the latest player to swap blue for red in London after a £48.5m fee was agreed between the two clubs, with Chelsea giving him permission to undergo a medical.

The 23-year-old will subsequently play no part in Chelsea’s bid to become world champions as they take on Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey on Sunday.

“Noni is in contact with the new club,” he told a press conference. “I guess he is going to be (announced) in the next hours.”

Maresca has long been complimentary about Madueke, who last season earned his maiden call-up to the England national team, causing some to wonder why this sale has been sanctioned.

The midfielder, who has won 84 caps, was recalled by new England manager Thomas Tuchel, who values his experience.

Arsenal agree world record £1m fee with Liverpool for Smith

09:22

,

Jack Rathborn

Arsenal have had a world-record bid accepted by Liverpool for forward Olivia Smith, which is set to make her the first £1m transfer in women’s football.

As first reported by the Guardian, the Gunners have beat competition from several clubs - including Women’s Super League champions Chelsea - to sign the 20-year-old Canada international.

Smith became Liverpool’s record signing when she joined from Sporting Lisbon for just over £200,000 last year and she scored seven goals for the Reds in her debut WSL campaign.

Arsenal have moved aggressively in the transfer market after winning the Women’s Champions League in May and the club want to compete with Chelsea on the domestic front.

Arsenal’s signing of Smith will eclipse the previous world record transfer in the women’s game set by Chelsea in January when they signed US international Naomi Girma for £900,000.
