Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd respond to Fernandes approach, Arsenal and Liverpool get Barcola boost, Man City near £85m deal

Manchester United are set to reject an audacious approach from Galatasaray for their captain Bruno Fernandes. The Turkish club are determined to sign a star this summer and are lining up a comprehensive financial package for the 31-year-old midfielder, but United’s stance is that Fernandes is not for sale. Fernandes has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford, but there is an option to extend for another year, and the Portuguese would not be allowed to leave in the week before the season starts.

Elsewhere, Manchester City have entered advanced talks to sign 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi for £85m and are also still interested Enzo Fernandez, despite missing Chelsea’s deadline for offers. City will sell Ballon d’Or winner Rodri to Barcelona in a deal worth up to £65m after finally accepting the advances of the Spanish champions. Bouaddi could be followed by Fernandez if City submit an offer of £120m, but Chelsea want the midfielder’s future to be resolved before their opening game of the season this weekend.

Bradley Barcola was left out of Paris Saint-Germain’s squad for the French Super Cup in a boost to Liverpool and Arsenal’s chances of signing the France international winger. Barcola was also an unused substitute in PSG’s Super Cup win over Aston Villa on Wednesday. The European champions were set to demand £145m for the 23-year-old but Liverpool are prepared to play the long-game as they bid to negotiate a price as Andoni Iraola targets a new winger. Arsenal, meanwhile, are in the market for a marquee attacking signing.

Galatasaray are preparing an audacious bid to sign Bruno Fernandes but the Manchester United captain is not for sale at any price.

The Turkish club are determined to sign a star this summer, following a busy transfer window for their rivals Fenerbahce and Besiktas, and are lining up a comprehensive financial package for the 31-year-old midfielder.

United’s stance is that Fernandes is not for sale. United will return to the Champions League this season after Fernandes broke the record for Premier League assists last campaign.

ICYMI: Liverpool and Arsenal get Bradley Barcola boost as winger left out of PSG squad

21:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique refused to discuss Bradley Barcola’s future after the Liverpool and Arsenal target was left out of their squad to play Lens in the French Super Cup last night.

Following the 1-0 defeat, Enrique said: “I’ll talk about the situation after the transfer window has passed”. Barcola was also an unused substitute in PSG’s win over Aston Villa in the European Super Cup on Wednesday.

Ibrahim Mbaye was also absent from the PSG squad against Lens. Liverpool expressed an interest in signing Mbaye earlier this summer, while both Liverpool and Arsenal are hoping to talk PSG down from their asking price.

Liverpool are prepared to pay £100m for the 23-year-old, but PSG have set their asking price at £145m. Liverpool are hopeful that they can continue to negotiate with PSG before the deadline.

Manchester City into 'advanced talks' with Ayyoub Bouaddi

21:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Manchester City have now entered “advanced talks” to sign 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi for around £85m.

Bouaddi impressed for Morocco at this summer’s World Cup and the Lille midfield has agreed personal terms with City.

The departure of Rodri to Barcelona has accelerated City’s interest after there were suggestions that he would arrive at the Etihad next year.

City are also interested in signing Enzo Fernandez, despite missing Chelsea’s Friday deadline to submit a bid for the Argentina international.

City have already undergone major changes in midfield this summer, spending £116m on Elliot Anderson, while agreeing a deal to sell Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadisah.

Enzo Maresca was asked about Bouaddi following Manchester City’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield on Sunday and said that when it comes to new signings the “sooner the better”.

"He's still a Lille player,” Maresca said. “But any new signing, any new player, for sure as soon as they arrive it's better. Because we're going to start the Premier League in one week.

“If they start to work with us as soon as possible, it's better if they can also understand the way we need to play."

Harry Maguire wants Marcus Rashford to stay at Manchester United

19:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Marcus Rashford made his first appearance for Manchester United in 20 months after returning to Michael Carrick’s side for their final pre-season fixture against AC Milan, but his Old Trafford future remains unclear.

He could yet be involved in United’s Premier League opener against Hull City on Saturday, with Carrick calling Rashford “our player” and saying it was “exciting” to have him back.

It was reported in May that United’s preference was to sell Rashford, who has two years remaining on his contract. Rashford wanted to stay at Barcelona but they opted against exercising their option to buy.

“Obviously the transfer window is still open. As players, we hope he stays because if he does, he is a big asset to have. He can improve us for sure," defender Harry Maguire said after the loss to Milan.

“You saw when he came on, he threatened the backline really well. He could have ‌scored. He's a huge threat. I've played with Marcus for numerous years and I know that playing against him `and playing with him in training is going to help us.”

New Scotland boss Sebastien Pocognoli details vision after succeeding Steve Clarke

18:55 , Gavin McCafferty

New Scotland head coach Sebastien Pocognoli believes the passion surrounding Scottish football aligns seamlessly with his philosophy.

The former Belgium international has been tasked with building upon Steve Clarke’s record of qualifying for three major tournaments.

Clarke stepped down following the World Cup after failing to inspire fans during the bulk of those tournament experiences, but Pocognoli stressed he will respect the heritage of his predecessor in terms of personnel and identity.

However, the 39-year-old, who guided Union Saint-Gilloise to their first Belgian title in 39 years, is also intent on imprinting his personality onto the squad.

"For me it’s an exciting challenge because I never go through a challenge where I can’t feel the connection. Scotland is a passionate country for football, I’m passionate.”

Juventus agree Guglielmo Vicario deal - but what about Emiliano Martinez?

17:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Tottenham have accepted a season-long loan offer with option to buy from Juventus for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who is set to return to Italy after two seasons at Spurs.

Tottenham will go into the new season with Antonin Kinsky as their No. 1 after his impressive end to last season, with Roberto De Zerbi approving Vicario’s departure.

Juventus, meanwhile, moved to compete a deal for the Italian Vicario after talks with Aston Villa to sign Emiliano Martinez broke down last night, amid conerns surrounding Martinez due to a finger injury.

Martinez is no longer the No 1 choice at Aston Villa after Unai Emery’s side beat Paris Saint-Germain to the signing of Japan international goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

How many players could leave Arsenal before transfer deadline?

15:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Mikel Arteta said he wanted to include Gabriel Martinelli, Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Jesus in his squad for the Community Shield - but couldn’t because of squad size restrictions.

All three players have been linked with a move away this summer and were not in Arsenal’s 20-man squad to face Manchester City in Cardiff. Arteta said afterwards that all three are “very important”.

He said: “It's really sad not to have their availability. I've been fighting with the Premier League to extend and accommodate more players in the squad because they deserve to be in the squad, there's no question.

"Ethan [Nwaneri] and Marli [Salmon] as well, who has had the whole pre-season with us. Hopefully we can change that rule so players can enjoy on the pitch and can be an option to play and contribute to the team going forward."

Martinelli turned down a £39m approach from Galatasaray while Arteta said that Nwaneri may need to go out on loan to get the minutes he needs this season.

DONE DEAL! Ipswich sign £50m double deal for Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara

15:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Ispwich have now announced the signings of Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara from Strasbourg. Both players played under Gary O’Neil last season at the French club.

Enciso, 22, spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan from Brighton, while Ouattara, 20, is a versatile player who can play at full-back or midfield. Both players have signed five-year deals.

"I am so happy to be back at Ipswich Town," Encisco. "I really enjoyed my time on loan at the club and I was so happy to see them win promotion back to the Premier League last season. I worked with the manager in France last season and the chance to play for him again at a great club like Ipswich is one I’m very excited for.”

Rodri set to arrive in Barcelona ahead of move

14:55 , Richard Jolly

Rodri is set to arrive in Barcelona this evening ahead of his £65m move from Manchester City.

Barcelona had two previous offers for Rodri refused with City deeming the first, of just £38.4m, not serious but their third bid matched City’s valuation.

Rodri, who had been reluctant to sign a new deal, has entered the last year of his contract and City risked losing him on a free transfer if he was not sold this summer.

Rodri, who was a club record £61m buy when he joined City in 2019, has scored 28 goals in 298 appearances for them, including the only goal in the 2023 Champions League final.

He won 11 trophies in total, including the Premier League four times, as well as the Ballon d'Or in 2024.

Martin Odegaard ready to get back to his best at Arsenal

14:35 , PA

Martin Odegaard has described how last season’s struggle with injury has made him stronger.

Odegaard lifted the Premier League trophy in May – his first silverware since he joined Arsenal in 2021 – but it was often a difficult campaign on a personal note with knee, shoulder and muscle problems limiting his role.

The Norway midfielder made just 16 league starts and missed the Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City, a defeat Arsenal avenged on Sunday by winning the Community Shield season curtain-raiser 3-0.

“Last year was really a big struggle with a lot of difficult moments,” Odegaard said after capping an outstanding individual display in Cardiff with his first club goal since December.“

It is the worst thing for a footballer to not be able to be on the pitch and I had quite a lot of weird injuries, and bad luck.

“It was good for me to end the season with a title here and then a good World Cup. Then I had my break and I feel good, ready to go again.

“Last season, to miss so many games because of injury was really frustrating. What I have just worked on is to use that as motivation for this year and to come back stronger.

“To use all of those experiences in a positive way. Hopefully I can do that.”

Ipswich Town are close to completing the signing of Julio Enciso from Strasbourg, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

Enciso, the Paraguay international and former Brighton forward, spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at the Portman Road club when they were last in the Premier League.

Brighton sold Enciso to French club Strasbourg, the sister club of Chelsea, where the 22-year-old worked under new Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil. Enciso is set to sign a five-year contract after the clubs agreed a £30m fee.

O’Neill is also set to sign one of his former players from Strasbourg. Abdoul Ouattara, the 20-year-old midfielder, is also set to join Ipswich in a £20m deal.

Chelsea outline new Enzo Fernandez deadline

13:42 , Miguel Delaney, Chief Football Writer

Chelsea want to resolve Enzo Fernandez’s future before their opening game of the Premier League season.

Talks are ongoing with the Argentina international, with Manchester City interested in signing the midfielder after agreeing to sell Rodri to Barcelona.

Chelsea had set a deadline of Friday for bids Fernandez, but that passed without City submitting an offer.

Fernandez was then booed by some Chelsea fans as he made his first appearance at Stamford Bridge since the summer.

Chelsea play Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, with the transfer window closing the following Tuesday on 1 September.

City have entered “advanced talks” to sign 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for around £85m.

But they are set to sell Tijjani Reijnders for £51m and Enzo Maresca is keen to reunite with Fernandez as he continues City’s midfield rebuild.

Manchester United to reject Galatasaray approach for Bruno Fernandes

13:33 , Miguel Delaney, Chief Football Writer

Galatasaray are preparing an audacious bid to sign Bruno Fernandes but the Manchester United captain is not for sale at any price.

The Turkish club are determined to sign a star this summer, following a busy transfer window for their rivals Fenerbahce and Besiktas, and are lining up a comprehensive financial package for the 31-year-old midfielder.

United’s stance is that Fernandes is not for sale. United will return to the Champions League this season after Fernandes broke the record for Premier League assists last campaign.

The Portuguese has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford, but there is an option to extend for another year, and Fernandes would not be allowed to leave in the week before the season starts.

Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool's new-look central defence will take time to gel

13:15 , PA

Virgil van Dijk accepts it will take time to build a connection with new signings Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo after Liverpool’s central defence received a summer overhaul.

The departure of Ibrahima Konate after an indifferent season in which he played the majority of games alongside Van Dijk in their disappointing Premier League title defence and ongoing fitness issues with Joe Gomez and Giovani Leoni meant the club had to act to improve an area of weakness.

A £60m deal for Jacquet was agreed at the end of the winter transfer window, but he immediately sustained a season-ending injury and so his first appearance for his new club was delayed until Sunday’s 2-0 friendly win over Como.

The 21-year-old put in an impressive 45-minute performance, scoring the second goal, before being replaced by former Barcelona captain Araujo, who arrived a week ago in a loan deal which could be made permanent and also looked good in his first outing.

Jacquet is set to start at Newcastle at the weekend and Van Dijk knows, for all their time on the training ground, it is only in matches they will be able to build a proper relationship.

“I won’t say it’s the only way, but games are totally different than training,” Van Dijk said.

“Jeremy’s English is, I would say, a bit better than Ronald’s, but at the end of the day we are all pretty good footballers, we can see and smell some moments on how to defend certain situations.

“But it’s pretty clear that you need to form a connection together and that takes a bit of time.”

Ranking every Premier League team before the most unpredictable season in years

12:15 , Jamie Braidwood

A new era of the Premier League begins on Friday as defending champions Arsenal kick off what looks to one of the most unpredictable seasons in years.

Pep Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City following a decade of dominance coincides with Arsenal’s return as defending champions for the first time 22 years. Mikel Arteta is now the longest-serving Premier League manager and the relative stability at the Gunners comes in sharp contract to the upheaval across the top-flight.

Nine Premier League clubs have changed managers over the summer, while Michael Carrick and Roberto De Zerbi begin their first full seasons at Manchester United and Tottenham, respectively. There are many unknowns across the Premier League, with Andoni Iraola taking charge of Liverpool and Xabi Alonso arriving at Chelsea.

Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City were promoted from the Championship last season, replacing the relegated West Ham, Burnley and Wolves, and will hope to take inspiration from a Sunderland who qualified for Europe last term in their first season back in the top-flight.

Spain’s World Cup-winning captain is set to leave the Etihad Stadium to join the LaLiga champions and leave City with the question of how to replace him.

Now they will have two weeks to find a replacement. They are interested in Ayyoub Bouaddi, with Lille manager Davide Ancelotti saying there have been talks about the Moroccan midfielder, and Enzo Fernandez.
